Dr. Gyozo Jordan (environmental chemist, geologist, professor, www.gyozojordan.hu, www.gem-rg.com) has 25 years professional and training experience, an internationally recognized expert. He worked for the EU/EC on Mine Waste Directive; 2014-2017 Chemistry Department head; previously department head, Geological Survey; 2013-2014 head of Mine Waste Assessment EU Project, Turkey. Dr. Jordan co-authored the European Geochemical Atlas and the European Geochemical Mapping Project. He is an expert in the UN ICPDR Contamination Expert Group for the Danube River, member of the European Federation of Geologists Soil Expert Panel, co-editor for Mine Water and Environment Journal. He is a specialist in the EU COST Action ’Industrially Contaminated Sites’. He worked in 9 countries (EU, China, USA). He acted as member in 11 professional committees, lead 21 funded projects, received 22 professional awards. Published 4 books, 57 ISCs and 141 other publications, UN/GEF and EC reports. Mining provides the most essential input to modern industrial development but it also produces the second largest waste stream in the world and it can cause wide-spread contamination risking human health, life quality, ecosystems and safe food supply. Sustainable extractive industry requires the joint effort of government, industry, scientific research and technology development organisations and the society. This study presents state-of-the-art mining environmental risk assessment and management as an efficient decision support tool that provides solutions and techniques in the European Union. Theory and methods are reviewed and application cases are demonstrated in the EU, China, Turkey and elsewhere.
