Dr Ian C Dunican (PhD, MMineEng, MBA, GCASSc, BA), Principal Consultant, Melius Consulting & Orbiz. Ian has 20 years international professional experience in health, safety and business improvement in military, mining, rail, oil & gas, utilities. As a global advisor for a major mining company, Ian was responsible for development of global practices, integration and project management within multiple product groups (Iron-Ore, copper, aluminium, diamonds, coal and uranium). This approach required the quantification, analysis and interpretation of multiple data streams to support health, safety, financial strength and productivity He is most interested in the relationships with other disciplines enabling productivity to deliver true value to organizations. Recently in conjunction with advancing his research interests, Ian has continued working within the mining sector (coal, iron ore and gold) facilitating several significant improvement projects for major mining companies including BHP, Anglo Ashanti Gold, South 32, Karara Mining, Peabody and Goldcorp.Ian is a regular speaker/chair at universities and international conferences in mining, transport, sports performance and physiology. He has also been featured on the health report on ABC radio, ABC radio national and numerous podcasts. Ian has appeared on ABC television, Channel 7, 9 and 10 in Australia. He was a TEDx Perth speaker in 2017.
Alertness and Productivity in Mining
In recent years, the International Council of Minerals and Metals (ICMM), the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) and many major mining, oil and gas organisations have identified fatigue & human performance as a critical material risks affected health, safety and production. Both fatigue & human performance are inherent to all organisations; in remote operations, control rooms and within corporate centres. In this master class we will address the components of an "Alertness and Productivity Model" now been considered within organisations to reduce these risks. Such an approach incorporates; compliance & regulation, scientific data analysis and technology solutions that supports safeguarding of health & safety to maximises productivity whilst reducing cost. The optimisation of human performance in conjunction with strategic asset management based upon the mine planning process has the potential to unlock triple bottom line (Economic, Environmental, Social) business value.
Integration of an alertness system to the business operating system.
Fatigue & impaired human performance has been identified as a critical/material risk in many mining, oil and gas organisations. Such risk is inherent to organisations as a result of 24/7 shiftwork and extended work duration in remote operations, offshore platforms, control centres and indeed for executives and leaders. This session will discuss the potential cost avoidance, productivity gains and safeguarding of health and safety. The approach of an "Alertness and Productivity Model" can be easily integrated and aligned with the business, health and safety strategy in conjunction with existing systems. This can minimise the business risk and potentially reduce insurance premiums with a quantifiable approach that proves the actual risk reduction. This session will incorporate the current best practice from the scientific literature, project examples from mining and the latest innovative approaches from Universities and technology providers from around the world.
